Prius Prime’s purposeful, aerodynamic features include an active front grille shutter that shuts at high speeds, underbody covers, side body fins and exclusive dual-wave rear glass design, all of which help Prime slip through the air. There’s a lot of innovation under the artfully sculpted exterior too. Optimized component placement – such as the battery pack – helps open up the rear cargo area and lower the overall center of gravity.
The power of using less to get more. Prius Prime features a Toyota-first dual motor drive system that uses both motors to propel Prime. The result is a boost in acceleration feel, improved efficiency and the added benefit of EV Mode at full highway speeds. It helps deliver an exhilarating experience and makes the drive toward tomorrow even more exciting.
Prime’s multi-link rear suspension helps you master those tight corners with ease. Its revised design expands cargo area space, which means you get an improved ride that’s smooth and responsive with enough room to do more.
The low-slung design of Prime’s chassis is built with a lower center of gravity. Its responsive suspension and well-balanced weight distribution results in fun-to-drive agility that wants to hug every curve of the road.
Aerodynamically unique and found only on Prime, the design of the dual-wave rear glass hatch flows into the rear spoiler for enhanced efficiency. The innovative rear hatch utilizes strong yet lightweight carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer and makes opening and closing seem effortless.
Prime features visually striking Quad-LED projector headlights, available LED fog lights and accent lights to help you see more of what matters. Bright and efficient, the rear taillights are also equipped with LEDs that consume less energy.
This available intelligent technology, called Predictive Fuel-Efficient Drive, helps boost fuel efficiency by learning your routine stopping patterns. When approaching a recorded stop, an icon will display on the map of the navigation system and suggest the optimal time to release the accelerator. Regenerative braking also activates sooner to recover more energy for the hybrid battery.
Prime offers three driving modes so that the driver stays in control: EV Auto Mode, EV Mode and HV Mode. EV Auto Mode intelligently selects between EV and hybrid driving based on demand and driving conditions to optimize your efficiency. EV Mode relies on EV driving to maximize efficiency, all the way up to full highway speeds. HV Mode efficiently combines the gas engine and EV power from the HV battery to drive Prime.
Prius Prime makes charging at home simple and more convenient than ever. In fact, there’s no need for special equipment—the charging cable is included, and it takes less than five-and-a-half hours to get a full charge using a standard household outlet. And charge scheduling allows you to schedule your charge in advance, allowing you to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates. You can forget about range anxiety—when your battery is low, and with gas in your tank, Prime can reliably get you where you’re going with its proven gas hybrid engine.
Maximize your efficiency by charging your Prime as often as possible. Public charging stations can provide a quicker charge so you’ll only need approximately two hours and ten minutes for a full charge from a 240V outlet. You can search for nearby charging stations, including tens of thousands of ChargePoint stations, on the available 11.6-in. HD multimedia display or on your smartphone through the available Prime apps.
Prime comes with standard heated front seats, so the comfort of you and your passenger is a top priority. And if you need more comfort for the drive, grab hold of the available heated steering wheel.
Prime’s 60/40 split fold-down rear seats fold to maximize cargo space and versatility. With 19.8 cu. ft. of space, the largest cargo capacity in its class, it will help you enjoy even more room—and more adventures.
Using an in-vehicle camera and radar to help detect a vehicle or a pedestrian in front of you, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD) can help you mitigate or avoid a potential collision. If the system determines that a frontal collision is likely, it prompts you to take action using audio and visual alerts. If you notice the potential collision and apply the brakes, PCS w/PD may apply additional force using Brake Assist (BA). If you don’t brake in time, it may automatically apply the brakes to reduce your speed, helping to minimize the likelihood of a frontal collision or reduce its severity.
Intended for highways and similar to “constant speed” cruise control, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) lets you drive at a preset speed. DRCC uses vehicle-to-vehicle distance control, which adjusts your speed, to help you maintain a preset distance from vehicles ahead of you that are driving at a slower speed. DRCC uses a front-grille-mounted radar and an in-vehicle camera to detect vehicles and their distance. If a driver is traveling slower than you, or within your preset range, DRCC will automatically slow your vehicle down without deactivating cruise control. If DRCC determines you need to slow down more, an audio and visual alert notifies you and brakes are applied. When there’s no longer a vehicle driving slower than your set speed in front of you, DRCC will then accelerate and regular cruise control will resume. Prius Prime features Full-Speed Range DRCC, which is designed to operate between 0-110 mph. However, vehicle speed must be above approximately 28 mph to initiate DRCC. This enables low-speed following, matching speed and, under certain circumstances, stopping before colliding with preceding vehicles on highways.
The Automatic High Beams (AHB) feature is a safety system designed to help the driver see more clearly at night — while reducing glare for other drivers. By using high beams more frequently, the system may allow for earlier detection of pedestrians and obstacles. When activated, AHB is designed to rely on an in-vehicle camera to help detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of proceeding vehicles, then automatically toggle between high and low beams.
When in Reverse, Prime’s standard integrated backup camera uses a wide-angle lens to display a larger viewing area. Clearly marked lines on the screen show the distance guidelines, giving you more confidence to get out of any spot—tricky or not.
